What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a 1:1 intensive reading programme aimed at Year One and Year Two children only.  Any child on the programme will do some very specific reading and writing with their RR teacher EVERY day they are in school.

By the time children get to the end of their programme it is expected that they will be able to read books at RR level 15 or above.

Booster Reading

This very new - and exciting - initiative is currently only being run in 10 Bristol primary schools!!  It is similar to RR except there is no writing involved.  The aim of Booster is to get all (or most) of the Year Two class reading at RR Level 15 or above.

Our Keystage One results in ALL subjects were a vast improvement on previous years.  Nearly all Year 2 children ended the year able to read at Level 20 or more!!

Books

Two years ago we invested a huge amount of money in buying exciting new books.  We have all been delighted with the children's response to these.  Each day the corridor buzzes with the excited chatter of children changing their books!

Reading in School and at Home

Reading is a VERY complicated process.  It requires alot of work by the child so don't under-estimate how hard they are working.  You would be surprised if you stopped to work out how many different things we all read on a daily basis. e.g. road signs, shopping lists, t.v. times. etc.

Once children become able readers, it is still imperative that they continue to practice their reading skills on a daily basis.

One of the many problems we frequently encounter is that of children believing that it is only the de-coding of the word on the page that is important.  We need to ensure that they understand what they are reading.

All new children are given an Upper Horfield bookbag when they start school.  If your child loses theirs, or you need to replace it for any reason, we do ask for a contribution of £1.50.(The actual cost is about £3.00).

Remember:

The only way to learn to read is by reading!

Book Fairs

We are planning to have another book fair in February so start saving up!  Remember that the school receives a small percentage of overall sales which we use to buy more books for the library and classrooms.
