REMEMBER!    EDUCATION MUST BE VALUED.    WE ALL HAVE A DUTY TO GIVE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE THE BEST START IN LIFE.

February 12th

Dear Parents and Carers,

Term 3 has been a very busy term at Upper Horfield Community School and Children’s Centre. Thank you to all the children, teachers and parents who have worked so hard to ensure that all our children are making good progress in learning and social skills.

Learning outside the classroom

Monday

Y5 and Y6 enjoyed a visit to Orchard Academy as part of their work in French. They watched a French play and learnt a lot of new vocabulary.

Tuesday

R – Y3 enjoyed a day of sports with a coach from Premier Sport.

Reception wrote this report with the help of Miss Bowman.

“Starfish class on Tuesday had an excellent time doing sports with a sports coach. We pretended to be pirates hopping to collect treasure. We pretended to be race drivers who drove in and out of spaces, and we drove tractors. We’d like to do this again, it was fantastic fun!”

Y5 and Y6 had the opportunity to take part in lunchtime Rugby Club.

After school the KS2 choir had the opportunity to work with Horfield C of E Primary in preparation for their performance onboard Concorde in March.

Wednesday

Y1 and Y2 went to the CLC. Y2 had won Bubble the Bear for having the best attendance last week and took him with them. Here is what Matthew wrote about it.

On Wednesday 10th February Y1 and Y2 went to the CLC in Brislington. We made photographs with Nigel and changed them to look funny. When we had our lunch. Bubbles was enjoying a cheese sandwich and a drink. In the afternoon we played with the controlbots. Bubbles got so excited that he wanted to play too. It was a really exciting day and Bubbles and Y1 and Y2 had a super time.”

PC Lavender, the local community policeman introduced himself to the children.

Y5 and Y6 enjoyed after school club at Bristol Rovers FC.

Thursday

Y3 had the opportunity to take part in Art Club.

Thank you to all the teachers who have put in such hard work in organising these events.

Stanger Danger

A parent contacted the school this week with concerns about a man acting suspiciously. I have spoken to PC Lavender, our local community policeman who assures me the matter is in hand.

We have reminded the children about “Stanger Danger” and have sent home a leaflet for you to discuss how to keep safe outside of school with the children. If you do ever see somebody near the school you are worried about please alert the school and phone the police straight away.

Swimming

We have had very positive reports from the swimming instructors about the children’s behaviour at swimming. The children going regularly are making excellent progress. Unfortunately KS 1 swimming had to be cancelled this week due to a technical problem at the pool. All payments can be carried forward into the first week after half term.

Reminder

School will be closed for half term next week. We will return at 8:45 on Monday 22nd February. The Children’s Centre will be open as usual.

Attendance for Term 3

Our attendance has been down this term due to poor attendance during the period of snow. Thank you to the parents that have made the effort to make medical appointments out of school hours. The school and the EWO will be contacting families who still need support in maintaining an acceptable level of attendance.

Overall attendance for Term 3 – 86% (target 95%)
