The development of communication, language and literacy is at the centre of young children's learning. This area involves communicating, speaking and listening in a range of situations. It also includes developing the ability to read a wide range of books and simple texts, plus write for a variety of purposes.

We encourage our children to:

communicate with others using good facial expressions

use good eye contact when they speak to others

 speak clearly and with confidence

 begin to ask simple questions

take turns in conversations with friends and adults they work and play with

speak politely with good morning, good afternoon, hello, good bye, please, thank you

learn to read and write the sounds of the alphabet

show interest when reading words and books

 listen carefully when others speak

listen and join in with enthusiasm to nursery rhymes, stories and songs

begin to form recognisable letters correctly

Mathematical development involves children learning to work with numbers, shapes, patterns and measures. This learning is developed through stories, songs, games, a range of activities and young childrens imaginative play.

We encourage our children to:

show an interest in numbers

begin to recognise numerals

say number names in order

learn to count objects correctly

represent numbers using their fingers, written marks and through pictures

begin to discuss and understand adding, subtracting, more, less

show an interest in and talk about shapes, patterns and measures

explore and build with shapes
